Tusker elephant donation by Myanmar - 2017
H.E. the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has donated a Tusker elephant to H.E. the President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Maithripala Sirisena for religious activities of Sri Lanka. This Tusker elephant’s name is “Pan Shwe Maung” which is 24 year old and 8 feet high.
Handing over ceremony was held at Yangon Zoo on 08th August 2017 with participation of Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation and officials of the Myanmar Timber Enterprise. H.E. the Ambassador Mr. K.W.N.D. Karunaratne officially took over this Tusker Elephant on this occasion.
This Tusker Elephant has shipped on 10th August 2017 to Sri Lanka by MV Dynamic Ocean 18 ship.
H.E. the President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Maithripala Sirisena offers this tusker elephant to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalanda Maligawa) in Kandy.
Marble Buddha Statue at Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Viharaya
5 feet height marble Buddha Statue was donated by Mr. Jayantha Rajakaruna, who is a member of Sri Lanka Association of Myanmar (Sri Lankan expatriate) to the Chief Incumbent of Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Viharaya - Anuradhapura, Venerable Dr. Nugatenne Paghnananda Nayake Thero in June 2017.
This Marble Buddha Statue is worth Kyats 26 lakhs (US$ 1925 ). The Embassy has made arrangements to send it to Sri Lanka with support of the Gulf Group of Company in Myanmar in free of charge.
This Marble Buddha Statue will be placed at Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Viharaya in Anuradhapura.,
Religious Ceremony held at Sacred Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon
On 29th June 2017, in collaboration with Embassy of the Sri Lanka and Board of Trustee at the Sacred Shwedgon Pagoda in Yangon the 10th Anniversary of Buddhist Channel in Sri Lanka was commemorated in a very glamorous manner.
For this religious ceremony, a delegation of Most Ven. Warakagoda Gnanarathana Mahanayake Thero, Asgiri Chapter, Most Ven. Napane Premasiri Mahanayake Thero, Ramanya Chapter, Ven. Daranagama Kusaladhamma Thero, Chief Incumbent of Sri Sambodhi Maha Viharaya and Chairman – The Buddhist Media Network and 23 other reverents. In addition to that, former H.E. the Ambassador for Thailand and well-known professor, Prof. J.B. Dissanayake, famous film director and actor, Mr. Jackson Anthony and around 300 Sri Lankan devotees were participated in this religious ceremony. At this significant event Prof. J.B. Dissanayake launched a book named "Sacred Land and Sacred Path - Myanmar and Sri Lanka" and 150 copies donated to Board of Trustee of Sacred Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar.
Members of the Board of Trustee of Sacred Shwedagon Pagoda facilitated this religious ceremony in Myanmar side. At this colorful event, it was decorated in an elegant manner with ten million flowers and lighting the oil lamps.
Sri Lankan expatriates living in Myanmar, staff of the Embassy of Sri Lanka and their families was also participated.
This program is published in newspapers, TV channels and electronic social media in Myanmar. It is a good opportunity to strengthen the relationship between our two countries which has a long history in Buddhist ties and also to strengthen cultural tourist aspects.

The Delegation of Mahasanga from Myanmar left for Sri Lanka to particiate International Celebration of the 14th United Nations Day of Vesak to be held in Sri Lanka from 12th to 14th May 2017.
The Delegation headed by Most Ven Dr. Ashin Nyanissara, Vice Sangaraja, Aggamahapanditha, Chancellor, Sitagu International Buddhist Academy comprising 20 members. H.E. the Ambassador, Mr. K.W.N.D. Karunaratna and Minister, Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon was meet this Buddhist delegation at the VIP lounge, Yangon International Airport on 6th May 2017 at 3.00 p.m.

H.E. Thura U Aung Ko, Union Minister of Religious Affairs and Culture, Myanmar will leave for Sri Lanka to participate for the UN International Vesak Celebration on 10th May 2017.
A proposal for bilateral cooperation in electricity sector was submitted to Ministry of Electric and Power, Myanmar on 28th February 2017. Accordingly, positive reply from Myanmar authorities for the said proposal.
Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), LECO and Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) under Ministry of Power & Renewable Energy, Sri Lanka have participated for this bilateral discussion on 28.02.2017 at Nay Pyi Taw.
A delegation consist of H.E. the Ambassador, Mr. K.W.N.D. Karunaratne and Dr. B.M.S. Batagoda, Secretary, Ministry of Power & Renewable Energy and representatives from Ceylon Electricity Board, LECO and Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau conducted a discussion on possible future cooperation/partnerships under the following topics –
Knowledge sharing and technology transfer in the areas of
- Transmission line and grid substation design and construction supervision
- Distribution system development
- Design and supervision of hydro power projects
- Generation and transmission planning studies
- Dam safety and monitoring
- Resource assessment, mapping and designing of wind, solar and mini hydro power projects
- Preparation of power purchase agreements.
This Bilateral discussion is a very fruitful discussion and prepares an action plan to implement in future.
Visit of Hon. Minister of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, to Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar from 7th to 10th March 2017
Hon. Minister of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne and four officials of Ministry of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine visited Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar from 7th to 10th March 2017 to attend the Digital Health Conference and 5th AeHIN General Meeting with the theme “Achieving the ADG’s with ICT.
Hon. Minister of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne was received by H.E. Mr. K.W.N.D. Karunaratne, Ambassador for Sri Lanka in Myanmar and officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Myanmar at the Nay Pyi Taw International Airport on 7th March 2017.
Digital Health is new and innovative concept of the health sector. So, it is very useful dialog with experts from other countries and institutions by sharing knowledge and experience for developing health sector in Sri Lanka.
